At a glance

  • Barclays said on Thursday, October 22, that it will cut about 5,000 jobs in 2026 — around 5% of a workforce of roughly 93,000 — citing efficiency from AI and other technology.
  • About 1,000 of the roles were already cut in the first half of the year; about 60% of the total falls in support and back-office functions.
  • Third-quarter pre-tax profit rose 12% to £2.3 billion, slightly below analysts' expectations, and the bank announced a new £500 million share buyback.
  • Investment bank income of £3.1 billion missed forecasts after fixed-income trading fell 19%; chief executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan said he was disappointed.

British bank Barclays said on Thursday, October 22, that it will cut about 5,000 jobs this year — around 5% of its global workforce — as artificial intelligence and other technology let it run with fewer staff. The announcement came alongside third-quarter results showing pre-tax profit up 12% at £2.3 billion, a little short of what analysts had expected.

What Barclays announced

The bank had roughly 93,000 employees at the end of 2025. It said about 1,000 roles were already removed in the first half of 2026, with the rest coming in the second half. Around 60% of the cuts fall in support functions, including operations, processing and some technology roles, rather than customer-facing or trading jobs.

In its results presentation, Barclays described the reductions as "organisational simplification" and efficiency "driven by AI", and said it was structurally reducing its cost base to create room for new investment. It booked a further £201 million of structural cost actions in the quarter.

Equities trading +47%
Return on tangible equity 11.7% in Q3, 13.8% year to date

Jobs to go in 2026 about 5,000 (≈5% of staff)

The results in detail

Profit grew, but the quarter was mixed. The investment bank, Barclays' biggest earner, brought in £3.1 billion, below expectations, because fixed-income trading — bonds, currencies and commodities — fell 19% at a time when large US rivals saw only small declines. Equities trading, by contrast, jumped 47%.

Chief executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan said he was "disappointed" with fixed income and promised it would get his attention. He linked the job cuts to "the investments which we've made into technology over a number of years". Barclays said it remains on track for its full-year targets, including a return on tangible equity above 12%, and the new buyback takes this year's shareholder distributions to about £2.8 billion.

Barclays shares were little changed in London trading on Thursday and are down about 12% so far this year.

Background: banks and AI

Barclays has spent three years on a cost and technology overhaul that had already removed thousands of roles in investment banking, IT and back offices. This time, however, the bank is tying cuts directly to AI: rather than claiming software has replaced individual workers, it says automation has made enough tasks redundant that many posts do not need to be refilled.

It is the latest big lender to shrink staff numbers as AI tools spread through banking, where document checks, reconciliation, compliance reviews and customer queries are among the tasks most easily automated.

Reactions

Investors focused more on the trading miss than on the job cuts, which were broadly expected as part of the bank's cost plan. Labour-market analysts have warned that back-office and entry-level finance roles are among the most exposed to AI, while banks argue the savings let them invest in new products and keep fees competitive. No union response had been published by the time of writing.

Why it matters

The announcement is one of the clearest statements yet by a major global bank that AI is now cutting headcount at scale, not just in pilot projects. For workers in banking support centres — including outsourced operations in India, Pakistan and elsewhere in South Asia that serve UK banks — it is a signal that routine processing work is shrinking. For the UK economy, it adds to concerns about white-collar job losses ahead of the government's Budget on October 28, where higher taxes on banks have not been ruled out.

What happens next

Barclays' next update on costs and staffing is expected with its full-year results early in 2027. Investors will watch whether fixed-income trading recovers in the fourth quarter, and whether the October 28 UK Budget raises the bank levy or surcharge. Other European banks report results over the coming weeks and may announce similar AI-linked cuts.
