Nigeria confirms first Ebola case in Abuja as outbreak spreads beyond Central and East Africa

A woman who travelled from Congo via Uganda tested positive in the Nigerian capital, and 44 contacts are being traced. Kenya has confirmed a ninth case as Congo's Bundibugyo outbreak becomes the second-largest on record.

At a glance

  • Nigeria confirmed an Ebola case in Abuja on Tuesday, October 20, in a woman who arrived from Uganda; she is in isolation and 44 contacts have been identified.
  • She developed symptoms on October 7 and was treated at a private hospital from October 11 before diagnosis; Uganda says she had travelled to Congo on business and only transited Uganda.
  • Kenya confirmed its ninth case, a family member of its first patient; all nine are in one cluster and 134 of 135 contacts are quarantined.
  • Congo's outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, has passed 9,000 cases and 4,000 deaths since May; there is no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for this strain.

Ebola has reached Nigeria, Africa's most populous country. Health authorities confirmed a case in the capital, Abuja, on Tuesday, October 20, in a woman who had travelled from Uganda — the furthest the current outbreak has spread from its centre in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Nigerian case

Patient A woman who arrived in Nigeria from Uganda
Symptoms began October 7
Hospital admission October 11, at a private hospital in Abuja
Status In isolation, receiving care
Contacts identified 44, being traced

Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate said: "She is in isolation and she is receiving quality medical care." He said Nigeria has the experience and public-health systems to respond, recalling how the country contained Ebola in 2014, when an infected traveller arrived in Lagos.

Uganda's health ministry said the woman had travelled to Congo on business and only transited Uganda in early October without symptoms. "Travel through Uganda does not establish that infection occurred here," it said, adding that Uganda currently has no confirmed active cases. Where she was exposed is still under investigation. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has begun mobilising support for Nigeria.

Kenya: ninth case

Kenya confirmed its ninth case on October 20 — a 24-year-old man who was already in quarantine and is a close family member of Kenya's first patient, who came from Congo via Uganda and died in Nairobi on October 5.

  • "All nine cases belong to one cluster," said Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth, with no sign of spread outside it.
  • Eight patients are stable; 134 of 135 contacts have been traced and quarantined.
  • Contacts who stay healthy through the 21-day monitoring period can go home from October 25.
  • Kenya has not restricted travel, trade or public gatherings.

The outbreak in numbers

Epicentre Democratic Republic of Congo (declared mid-May 2026)
Strain Bundibugyo
Cases in Congo More than 9,000
Deaths in Congo More than 4,000
Uganda 20 cases in May–June; declared Ebola-free in August
Kenya 9 cases, one cluster
Nigeria 1 confirmed case

Europe's disease-control agency calls it the second-largest Ebola epidemic on record, and Africa CDC's director-general, Jean Kaseya, says it is the most geographically widespread ever, spanning three regions of Africa. There is no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain.

How Ebola spreads — and how to stay safe

  • Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of a sick person, or with contaminated items such as bedding. It does not spread through the air like flu.
  • Symptoms appear 2 to 21 days after exposure: fever, weakness, aches, then vomiting, diarrhoea and sometimes bleeding.
  • Wash hands often, avoid contact with sick people's fluids, and seek care immediately if you develop symptoms after travel to an affected area.

Why it matters

A case in a major West African capital with busy international air links raises the risk of wider spread. Nigeria's 2014 response is still seen as a model of fast contact tracing; repeating it will be crucial. Travellers between Africa, the Gulf and South Asia — including Pakistani workers and business travellers — should follow health advice and screening at airports.

What happens next

Nigerian health teams will monitor the 44 contacts for 21 days. Investigators are working to pinpoint where the woman was infected, and the World Health Organization and Africa CDC are expected to step up support.

Questions people are asking

Is there Ebola in Nigeria?

Yes. Nigeria confirmed one case in Abuja on October 20, 2026, in a woman who had travelled from Congo via Uganda. She is in isolation and 44 contacts are being traced.

What is the Bundibugyo Ebola strain?

One of the species of Ebola virus that cause severe disease. Unlike the more common Zaire strain, there is no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for Bundibugyo, which makes outbreaks harder to contain.

What are the symptoms of Ebola?

Sudden fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat, followed by vomiting, diarrhoea and sometimes bleeding. Symptoms appear 2 to 21 days after exposure. Anyone with symptoms after travel to an affected area should seek medical help immediately.
