The bigger picture for 2026

Petrol began the year at Rs253.17 a litre and was around Rs266 in the first week of March, shortly after the US-Iran war broke out on February 28. As the Strait of Hormuz was disrupted and crude prices spiked, petrol reached a record Rs458.41 on April 3, while diesel peaked at Rs520.35. Prices have eased since, but petrol remains about Rs140 higher than in January.

Taxes are a large share of the bill. The government collects around Rs114 a litre in taxes and duties on petrol and about Rs100 on diesel. Petroleum levy collections reached roughly Rs1.34 trillion between July 2025 and April 2026.

What to expect

Domestic prices track international crude and refined-product premiums. With Brent trading above $100 a barrel and attacks on shipping around Hormuz continuing, analysts expect volatility to persist. Diesel matters most for transport and farming costs, so its movements feed quickly into food and freight prices.
