Elon Musk's SpaceX has turned its first profit as a publicly traded company. AI overtakes Starlink

SpaceX's AI arm, renamed SpaceXSI, rents out huge amounts of computing power to AI developers and tech companies. Its revenue nearly tripled in one quarter, and it includes Cursor, the AI coding tool SpaceX bought in August at an implied value of $60 billion, which added $608 million in sales.

Starlink keeps growing

  • 13.6 million consumer subscribers, up 1.6 million in the quarter (analysts had hoped for about 2.3 million).
  • Average revenue of $69 a month per consumer customer.
  • More than 3,800 aircraft now use Starlink.
  • SpaceX agreed in October to buy 800 MHz spectrum licences to improve its Starlink Mobile phone service; the deal needs regulatory approval.

Rockets and Starship

SpaceX flew 35 missions in the quarter — 12 for customers and 23 for itself. Starship Flight 14 became the giant rocket's first revenue-earning mission, deploying 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites.

Musk's share gift

Musk has said he plans to give a SpaceX share to "every kid in America" next year — about 72 million children, worth roughly $10 billion at current prices. Details have not been announced, and his own shares are locked up until 2027 under the terms of the June listing.

Background

SpaceX listed its shares in June 2026 under the ticker SPCX, raising about $85.7 billion at $135 a share in one of the biggest stock-market debuts ever. Its first report as a public company, in August, showed a $541 million loss.

Why it matters

The results show how quickly SpaceX has become an AI infrastructure company as well as a rocket and internet business. But spending is enormous: analysts expect capital expenditure of about $70 billion this year and far more by 2028, funded partly by rising debt. For Starlink users worldwide — including in South Asia, where it is expanding — growth means more satellites and coverage, but SpaceX's priorities are increasingly shaped by AI.

What happens next

SpaceX gave no financial guidance. Investors will watch whether AI demand stays strong, how fast Starlink keeps adding customers, and progress on Starship ahead of the next report in early 2027.
