Brook's record innings

Brook, who leads England in one-day cricket, batted through to the final ball of the innings, when he was caught off Janith Liyanage. His 202 came off 116 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes.

  • He reached 200 in 114 balls, breaking the record of 117 balls set by India's Shubman Gill against West Indies in September 2026.
  • He became the first England batter to score an ODI double century, beating Ben Stokes's 182 as England's highest individual ODI score.
  • He is only the second player, after Chris Gayle, to have a Test triple century, an ODI double century and a T20 international century.
  • He is also the first batter to score a double century in a men's ODI and still finish on the losing side.

Brook shared stands of 159 for the third wicket with Joe Root and 185 off 79 balls for the fourth wicket with Will Jacks, who reached fifty in 25 balls. England scored 156 runs in their last 10 overs. During his 69, Root became the first England batter to reach 8,000 ODI runs, in his 197th match. Tom Banton made his fourth successive fifty.

England's 429-4 was the highest ODI total ever recorded in Pakistan, beating Pakistan's 375-3 against Zimbabwe in Lahore in 2015, and the most runs Sri Lanka have ever conceded in the format.

How Sri Lanka chased it down

Sri Lanka kept up with the rate from the start. Avishka Fernando, who had 55 from 52 balls before the halfway mark, went on to 97, Rathnayake made 130 and Dasun Shanaka added a fast 97, and the target came down to 28 from 20 balls with five wickets left. England then took three quick wickets and Sri Lanka needed seven from the last three balls at 423-8 — before Liyanage, the bowler who had removed Brook, finished it with a six off the penultimate ball of the match.

What it means for the tri-series

Sri Lanka's first win gives them two points and moves them ahead of England in the race for the second place in the final behind unbeaten Pakistan, who beat Sri Lanka by 37 runs and England by 87 runs earlier in the week.

Team Played Won Lost Points
Pakistan 2 2 0 4
Sri Lanka 2 1 1 2
England 2 0 2 0

For England, two defeats from two means they now probably need to win both of their remaining games to reach the final.

Why it matters

The match was a showcase for batting in Pakistan, where the series is drawing crowds as the country hosts top international teams. For Sri Lanka, beating England with a near-record chase is a big lift; for England, losing after making the highest total ever scored in Pakistan raises questions about their bowling, with Sam Curran conceding 103 runs in his ten overs.

What happens next

The series moves to Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Pakistan play England on Sunday, October 25, Pakistan face Sri Lanka on Tuesday, October 27, and Sri Lanka meet England on Thursday, October 29. The top two teams play the final on Saturday, October 31. All matches start at 1pm Pakistan time.
