Tesla Q3 2026 results: revenue flat at $28.05 billion, profit falls 43% as AI spending soars
Tesla's margins recovered and it beat profit forecasts, but net income fell to $787 million as spending on robotaxis, Optimus robots and AI jumped. Battery supply is now limiting car sales.

At a glance
- Tesla reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $28.05 billion, flat on a year earlier and in line with forecasts.
- Adjusted earnings were $0.48 a share, above the expected $0.45; GAAP net income fell 43% to $787 million.
- Operating income dropped 56% to $718 million as research spending rose 69% to $2.76 billion.
- Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles and deployed 13.7 GWh of energy storage; it says battery supply limited car output.
Tesla's sales stood still in the third quarter of 2026 and its profit fell sharply, even as the company beat Wall Street's earnings forecast. The electric carmaker reported revenue of $28.05 billion and a net profit of $787 million, down 43%, after markets closed on Wednesday, October 21, as spending on artificial intelligence, robotaxis and humanoid robots grew far faster than sales.

Results by business
| Business | Revenue | Change on a year earlier |
|---|---|---|
| Cars (automotive) | $20.56bn | –3% |
| Energy generation and storage | $2.88bn | –16% |
| Services and other | $4.61bn | +33% |
The core car business made a gross margin of 18.1% excluding regulatory credits, up from 15.4% a year ago — a sign that cost cuts are working even as average prices keep falling. Income from selling emission credits to other carmakers shrank to $113 million from $417 million.
The energy business earned less revenue but a much better margin of 33%. Services, which include insurance, charging and repairs, posted a record gross profit of $734 million.
Deliveries and batteries
Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles and built 464,391, deploying 13.7 GWh of battery storage — below the roughly 15.9 GWh analysts expected. Deliveries of its Cybertruck, Semi and Model S/X fell 48%.
The company said battery availability was the main limit on making more cars, and reported its largest order backlog for passenger vehicles in four years. Inventory fell to 11 days of supply from 15 in the previous quarter.
Where the money is going
Operating expenses rose 39% to $4.78 billion, and research and development jumped 69% to $2.76 billion, driven by work on the Optimus humanoid robot, self-driving software and AI computing. Stock-based pay for staff nearly doubled to $1.17 billion.
The net profit figure also included a $288 million paper gain on Tesla's bitcoin and a $142 million paper loss on its stake in SpaceX.
Self-driving and robotaxis
- Active Full Self-Driving (FSD) users rose 67% to 1.74 million, counting both subscriptions and one-time purchases.
- Tesla's robotaxis have covered nearly 2 million miles without a safety driver.
- The two-seat Cybercab joined the robotaxi fleet in Austin, Texas, about a month before the end of the quarter.
Background
Tesla's sales have struggled for two years as competition from Chinese brands such as BYD grew and its model line-up aged. Chief executive Elon Musk has shifted the company's focus to autonomy and robots, arguing they will be worth far more than car sales. Earlier this week, special committees at Tesla and SpaceX were reported to be studying a possible merger of the two Musk companies.
Why it matters
The results show Tesla's car business is stabilising on margins but not growing, while the company is spending heavily on technology that has yet to earn much money. For investors, the key question is whether robotaxis and Optimus can deliver profits before the spending runs ahead of cash. For buyers in Asia, including Pakistan, India and the Gulf, falling average prices and a big backlog mean Tesla is pushing cheaper versions while battery supply stays tight.
What happens next
Tesla had earlier guided for more than $25 billion of capital spending in 2026; with $13 billion spent so far, that implies about $12 billion in the final quarter. Musk is expected to give more detail on the robotaxi expansion and Optimus production on the earnings call. Fourth-quarter delivery figures are due in early January 2027.
