At a glance

  • Taylor Fritz reached the Swiss Indoors semifinals on Friday, October 30, 2026, when second seed Arthur Fils retired trailing 6-2, 2-0.
  • Fils said he will have tests in Paris and feels confident about the Paris Masters, which starts on Monday.
  • Fritz meets Valentin Vacherot, who beat Holger Rune 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; Jiri Lehecka ended home wild card Jerome Kym's run 6-4, 6-2.
  • Fils has 3,525 points in the race to Turin, 545 clear of the first man outside the top eight; Fritz is 324 short of the last place.

Arthur Fils retired injured from his Swiss Indoors quarterfinal on Friday, October 30, 2026, trailing Taylor Fritz 6-2, 2-0, and now faces tests just three days before the Paris Masters, the tournament he was counting on to lock up a place at the ATP Finals. Fritz goes through to a Basel semifinal against Valentin Vacherot.

The trouble showed early. Fils, the second seed, was cutting rallies short and looked low on energy before calling the physio at 2-5 in the first set. About three minutes of treatment changed nothing. He lost the set, dropped serve to open the second, and at 2-0 down told the umpire he could not go on.

What Fils said about Paris

Early accounts described a lower-back complaint, but the Frenchman spoke of his leg. "I felt a little pain in my leg on a movement at the very start of the match, and it didn't go away," he said, without saying which one. He plans to return to Paris for tests and said those results would decide what he does for the rest of the season.

Asked directly about the Paris Masters, he was upbeat: "Yes, I feel confident." The tournament begins on Monday at the Paris La Défense Arena in Nanterre, and Fils would not be needed on court before Tuesday or Wednesday, which gives him a little time.

Friday's four quarterfinals in Basel

Match Score
Taylor Fritz (6) bt Arthur Fils (2) 6-2, 2-0 retired
Valentin Vacherot bt Holger Rune 6-3, 3-6, 6-3
Jiri Lehecka bt Jerome Kym 6-4, 6-2
Jan-Lennard Struff bt Nuno Borges 6-2, 6-3

That leaves Fritz against Vacherot, and Lehecka against Struff, in Saturday's semifinals. Fritz beat Vacherot in the first round here last year in a match of more than two and a half hours.

The win was Fritz's 40th of the season, the fifth year in a row he has reached that mark, days after he turned 29. It also takes him to his first Basel semifinal and his fourth ATP 500 semifinal in five events this year, after Dallas, Halle and Washington. His head-to-head with Fils now stands at 1-1.

The end of Kym's week, and more for Struff

Basel lost its home story on Friday. Jerome Kym, a 23-year-old wild card ranked No. 222, had knocked out Ben Shelton and become the first Swiss man in the quarterfinals since Dominic Stricker three years ago. Lehecka, ranked 21st, needed 1 hour 25 minutes to end the run, with Kym missing a break point at 3-1 in the first set and then losing serve from 40-0. The week should still lift him about 60 places in the rankings.

Struff, who knocked out Novak Djokovic in the previous round, keeps going at 36 with a straightforward win over Borges.

Where this leaves the race to Turin

The ATP Finals run from November 15 to 22, and Paris is the last Masters 1000 before the eight places are settled.

Player Race points Position
Arthur Fils 3,525 Inside the top eight, 545 clear of the first man out
Rafael Jodar 3,209 Holds the eighth and last place
Alex de Minaur 2,980 First man outside
Taylor Fritz 2,885 324 behind Jodar

Fils's lead is healthy but not safe. With 1,000 points for the Paris champion, several players could still pass him if he is forced to miss his home event. Fritz needs a strong finish in Basel and a deep Paris run to climb back in.

Fils went into the match needing the Basel title to seal his place outright. Instead, he goes home for scans, and his first possible match in Paris is on Tuesday or Wednesday.
