- The interior ministry said five police officers died near Al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis. Hospital officials said three people, including a child, died in Gaza City's Al-Rimal neighbourhood.
- Israel's military said it hit several militants in Khan Younis and targeted others in the north, and was examining the results.
- Gaza's health ministry counted 1,580 people killed since the October 2025 ceasefire as of October 31. Israel says four of its soldiers have died in that time.
Israeli strikes killed at least eight Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, medics and the Hamas-run interior ministry said. Five of the dead were police officers, killed near Khan Younis in the south. Three more, including a young child, died in Gaza City.
Israel's military said it was targeting militants and gave a different account of who was hit. Neither version has been independently established.
Two strikes, two ends of the Strip
| Where | Killed | Reported by | Israel's account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Al-Rimal, Gaza City | 3, including a child | Medics, hospital officials | Targets in the north; results being examined |
| Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis | 5 police officers | Gaza interior ministry | Several militants struck |
The interior ministry said the five officers were on duty when a drone strike hit them. It named the men and called the attack a massacre. Bodies were taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, while mourners gathered at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
In Gaza City, hospital officials said the strike hit a gathering. A relative, Ali Oweis, said his son and grandchild were killed while sitting in a tent when a missile struck. Local reports give the child's age as four.
What each side is claiming
Israel says Hamas has been rearming and launching attacks in breach of the ceasefire, and it has stepped up strikes on the group in recent weeks. Hamas denies trying to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal, and accuses Israel of undermining the peace deal.
The two sides also disagree about who the dead were. Gaza's authorities describe them as a child, civilians and police. Israel describes its targets as terrorists, without giving names or further detail.
The toll since the truce
The US-brokered ceasefire began in October 2025. It has held in name while killings have continued, and the counts differ by who is keeping them.
| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Palestinians killed since the ceasefire | 1,580, as of October 31 | Gaza health ministry |
| Reported killed since the ceasefire | More than 1,400, as of October | United Nations |
| Israeli soldiers killed since the ceasefire | 4 | Israel |
| Total killed in Gaza since October 2023 | 74,594 | Gaza health ministry |
The war began with the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023, which Israel says killed about 1,200 people, with 251 taken hostage.
A territory split in two, and talks going nowhere
Israeli forces hold about two-thirds of Gaza, from which they have ordered residents out. Nearly all of the more than 2 million people who remain are packed into the other third, mostly in tents and damaged buildings, under effective Hamas control. Al-Mawasi, where the police officers died, lies in that remaining area.
That map has barely moved because the central questions of the deal remain unsolved. Negotiators have not agreed terms for Hamas to disarm or for Israel to withdraw its troops, and reconstruction depends on both.
Regional attention is meanwhile on Doha, where Qatari mediators are holding separate talks with Iran on the Strait of Hormuz and the wider war. No date has been announced for a new round of negotiations on Gaza.
