Pakistan hockey has a new plan for a comeback. The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and media company Media Cast officially launched the Pakistan Hockey League (PHL) 2027 at a ceremony in Islamabad on Wednesday.
Government backing
Chief guest Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, chairman of the Prime Minister's Youth Programme, pledged the government's support for the sport. PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani set out long-term reforms covering playing standards, infrastructure and facilities, corporate investment and incentives for players.
A professional structure
The league is designed to bring international players, local talent, corporate sponsors and team owners together in a professional, franchise-style setup — a model that transformed Pakistani cricket through the PSL. Media Cast, owned by Salman Danish, will work with the PHF to organise the event, secure sponsors and build a sustainable commercial model.
Organisers say the aims are to revive the sport, attract investment, raise the standard of competition and reconnect younger generations with Pakistan's proud hockey history.
What we don't know yet
The number of teams, the competition format, venues, prize money and match dates have not been announced. GlobeHourly will update this story as details are confirmed.
Why it matters
Hockey is Pakistan's national game, and the country has won the Olympic gold three times and the World Cup a record four times. But results have declined sharply in recent decades. A well-funded league could give players regular, high-quality matches and a pathway back to the international top tier.
