Pakistan's tax season has been one of the busiest on record. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) extended the deadline for Tax Year 2026 income tax returns from September 30 to October 15 through Circular No. 3 of 2026-27, using its powers under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. On October 15, Pakistani media reported that the deadline had been extended again.

Why the extension came

Trade bodies, the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry and tax bar associations had asked for more time, citing delays in return forms and repeated slowdowns and glitches on the FBR's IRIS portal. The first extension came only hours after the FBR had dismissed a circular on social media as fake — a reminder to rely only on official FBR channels.

Filings are up sharply

About 5.8 million returns were filed by September 30, compared with 3.8 million by the same date in 2025, according to ProPakistani. Earlier data showed about 1.3 million returns from new taxpayers. Despite the higher count, tax paid with returns was reported to be around Rs8 billion lower than last year.

Overall collections are on track. The FBR collected about Rs3.066 trillion in July–September, beating its first-quarter target of Rs3.053 trillion, and also met its September target of Rs1,330 billion.

New penalties

The rules have tightened this year. FBR sources say the "late filer" category was discontinued from October 1, so people who miss the deadline are treated as non-filers. The penalty for individuals who fail to file can reach Rs25,000, up from Rs1,000. Under the Finance Act 2026-27, getting back onto the Active Taxpayers List costs Rs25,000 for individuals, Rs50,000 for associations of persons and Rs100,000 for companies.

What you should do

If you have not filed, do it as early as possible and keep a copy of your acknowledgement. Check the deadline on the FBR's official website or verified social media accounts, and don't rely on forwarded screenshots.
