At a glance

  • At least 11 people were killed and more than 60 wounded in shootings in seven US states over Halloween night, and the counts may still rise.
  • The deadliest scene was Deep Ellum in Dallas, where three separate shootings left four dead and 15 hurt.
  • Other deaths were reported in Jacksonville, Jackson, Birmingham and Bloomington, Illinois; Newark in Delaware and Fayetteville in Arkansas each had six wounded.
  • Dallas police say early signs point to the three shootings being unconnected. No single motive links the attacks across the country.

At least 11 people were killed and more than 60 injured in shootings across seven US states over Halloween night, as parties, nightlife districts and a college football crowd came under gunfire between Saturday evening and early Sunday, November 1. The worst toll came from the Deep Ellum district of Dallas, where three separate shootings left four people dead and 15 hurt.

Police have not linked the attacks to each other. Most appear to be local disputes that turned deadly in crowded places, and several investigations are only hours old. Some victims drove themselves to hospital, so the numbers may move.

The city-by-city list

Place Dead Wounded What police say
Deep Ellum, Dallas, Texas 4 15 Three separate shootings; some arrests, number not given
Jacksonville, Florida 2 11 Two unrelated shootings at Halloween parties
Jackson, Mississippi 2 2 Man and woman killed at a nightclub
Birmingham, Alabama 1 8 Outside Legion Field after the Magic City Classic; one person detained
Bloomington, Illinois 1 7 19-year-old woman killed near Illinois Wesleyan University
Newark, Delaware 0 6 Near the University of Delaware; Main Street closed for about five hours
Fayetteville, Arkansas 0 6 An altercation came first; no arrests yet

The table lists the incidents with confirmed figures, so it does not add up to the national tally. A separate fatal shooting of a University of Colorado student at a Boulder house party, and a shooting at a Spirit Halloween store in Fairfield, California, were also under investigation over the same weekend.

Three shootings, one spread-out scene in Dallas

Deep Ellum is a walkable strip of bars and music venues east of downtown Dallas, and it was packed for Halloween. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux called it a large, scattered crime scene and said a first assessment suggested the three shootings were not connected.

Officers were already there in force. Comeaux said the department had planned for a busy Saturday and had staffed up. A witness described hearing one round of gunfire, then another, and watching officers run from one scene to the next. Comeaux said some people had been arrested and were being questioned, without saying how many or on what charges.

A 100-year-old rivalry game ends in gunfire

In Birmingham, the shooting broke out on Graymont Avenue, where vendors had set up beside Legion Field, after Alabama A&M beat Alabama State 31-28 in front of nearly 70,000 people. Police Chief Michael Pickett said most spectators and families had already left. Officers detained one person for questioning and recovered several weapons.

Mayor Randall Woodfin said no dispute could justify such violence on a night meant for families.

In Jacksonville, a 17-year-old girl waiting in a crowd to enter a party was hit around 1:45am by gunfire not aimed at her, police said. Investigators believe two people opened fire. A 20-year-old man died separately after a fight at a house party.

College towns on the list

Three of the shootings happened next to campuses. In Bloomington, Illinois, police said the attack near Illinois Wesleyan appeared isolated and posed no continuing threat; a second woman was in critical condition. In Newark, six people were shot shortly after 11:10pm near the University of Delaware, and video from the street showed people running for cover. Delaware's governor, Matt Meyer, also pointed to a separate shooting in Ellendale.

In Fayetteville, home to the University of Arkansas, six people went to hospital with gunshot wounds after what police described as an argument.

What comes next

Dallas police are expected to give arrest details and identify the dead once families have been told, and Bloomington police are holding back the victim's name for the same reason. Birmingham police are questioning the person detained outside Legion Field, and the overall count may rise as hospitals and smaller departments report in.
