Sourabh Chandrakar, the alleged promoter of India's Mahadev betting app, has been extradited from Oman and will be produced before a CBI special judge in Raipur on Monday, India's Central Bureau of Investigation said on Sunday. Oman approved India's request, and a CBI team travelled to Muscat to escort him back.
He had been detained by Royal Oman Police after an Interpol Red Corner Notice was issued against him. A Red Corner Notice asks police in other countries to locate and provisionally hold a wanted person while extradition is arranged; it is not itself an arrest warrant, and the final decision lay with Oman. The CBI said he would undergo a medical examination and be taken to Raipur after getting transit remand.
What investigators say the Mahadev Online Book did
The CBI describes the Mahadev Online Book as among India's largest alleged illegal online betting syndicates, run through a network of franchised panels and branches across the country. According to the agency:
- It offered illegal betting on cricket, football, card games and other events.
- Proceeds were routed through mule bank accounts, layered transactions and hawala channels.
- Part of the money was allegedly paid to public servants as protection money.
Chandrakar is wanted in two CBI cases, where chargesheets have already been filed, and in one Enforcement Directorate case, where a prosecution complaint has been filed. The allegations have not yet been proven in court, and his side's response to the extradition had not been reported on Sunday. Reports put the scale of the money laundering case at around Rs 6,000 crore.
Why Chhattisgarh is at the centre
The case is being heard in Raipur because the investigation grew out of Chhattisgarh, the home state of the app's alleged founders, and it became a major political issue there. It later spread far beyond the state, with film and entertainment figures questioned over promotional events linked to the platform.

What it means for people using betting apps
Online betting for money is widely restricted in India, and these platforms are not protected by any consumer rules. Users who lose money or have accounts blocked generally have nowhere official to go. Investigators in many such cases have also frozen mule accounts, which are often held in the names of ordinary people paid a small fee for their bank details. Lending an account in this way can leave its holder facing questions from police.
The same problem exists elsewhere in South Asia, including Pakistan, where illegal betting apps are aggressively advertised on social media, often around cricket tournaments.
What the next hearings should reveal
The Raipur court is expected to decide on Monday how long Chandrakar stays in CBI custody. Investigators will be looking for details of the money trail and the alleged payments to officials, which have been the most politically sensitive part of the case. He also faces the separate Enforcement Directorate case.
