Street Fighter: a solid start, a big budget
Based on Capcom's classic fighting game, Street Fighter opened below this year's Mortal Kombat II ($38.5 million) but far above earlier attempts to film the game: the 1994 Street Fighter opened with $6.6 million and made just under $100 million worldwide.
Critics were divided — 42% of reviews were positive — and the film's reported production budget of more than $100 million means it needs strong business overseas. Analysts expect a final North American total of about $65–75 million. Next weekend it faces DC's horror film Clayface, which targets a similar audience.
A record-breaking documentary
The surprise of the weekend was You Can See Everything, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim and released by A24. The documentary follows Fielder's time with Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes before she went to prison. Its $15 million opening from only 855 cinemas is the second-biggest ever for a documentary, behind Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004, and the fourth-biggest opening in A24's history.
The other new releases
- Whalefall — Brian Duffield's adaptation of Daniel Kraus's 2023 novel, starring Austin Abrams as a diver trapped inside a whale — opened with $8 million at home and $17.5 million worldwide. Critics were mostly positive (71%) and audiences gave it a "B" CinemaScore.
- Sense and Sensibility — Georgia Oakley's new adaptation of Jane Austen's novel — opened with $7.25 million from 2,545 cinemas against a reported $25 million budget. Ang Lee's 1995 version earned more than $43 million in North America.
- Jailer 2 — the sequel to the 2023 Tamil action hit entered at No. 9 with $3.27 million from just 800 cinemas, another sign of how strongly South Asian films now perform with diaspora audiences in North America.
The holdovers
Last week's No. 1, Other Mommy, dropped 70% in its second weekend but has earned $44.9 million at home and nearly $79 million worldwide. Resident Evil passed $148 million in North America and $340 million worldwide, making it one of the year's biggest video-game adaptations.

New releases include DC's Clayface, the animated Wildwood, Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G: Who Iz I?, Taika Waititi's Klara and the Sun starring Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams, and A Talent for Murder with Helen Mirren as the novelist Patricia Highsmith.
