West Indies beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the first Test in Mirpur on Saturday, chasing 170 before lunch on day four to go 1-0 up in the two-match series. Opener Brandon King made an unbeaten, career-best 81, and Jomel Warrican and captain Roston Chase took at least 14 of Bangladesh's 20 wickets between them.

Attack, not survival: how King and Campbell beat a turning pitch

Bangladesh will have hoped 170 was enough on a surface breaking up by day four, in a session interrupted by bad light, rain and lightning. West Indies' openers chose not to wait for the ball with their name on it. King and John Campbell swept with confidence, kept the score moving, and put on 112 before Shoriful Islam bowled Campbell with an in-swinger for 49.

Hasan Mahmud then removed Tagenarine Chanderpaul for one, and for a moment Bangladesh had an opening. It closed quickly. Kavem Hodge made 31 not out in a stand of 50 from 58 balls with King, who reached fifty off 68 and finished with 10 fours and a six from 115 balls. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto dropped King at second slip during the chase.

The scorecard

Innings Team Score Key performers
First Bangladesh 272 Warrican 5-53
First West Indies 245 Campbell 54
Second Bangladesh 142 Nayeem Hasan 52; Chase 5-36, Warrican 4-63
Second West Indies 170-2 (35.1 overs) King 81, Campbell 49, Hodge 31

Nayeem's fifty and the spin that decided it

Bangladesh resumed at 79-6 and added only 63. Most of those came from Nayeem Hasan, the off-spinner, who scored a maiden Test fifty off 87 balls and was last out for 52 after being dropped by Chase on 29.

Warrican, the left-arm spinner, was named player of the match for his nine wickets. Chase, leading the side with his off-spin, took his fifth five-wicket haul in Tests and with it his 100th Test wicket. Spin took nine of the 10 wickets in Bangladesh's second innings, a hard outcome for a home team that usually relies on these conditions.

What it does to the World Test Championship table

The result lifted West Indies and also helped a team that was not playing. India moved up to fourth in the 2025-27 World Test Championship standings, with Bangladesh falling to fifth. New Zealand now sit top, after Australia's series defeat in South Africa earlier on Saturday reshaped the upper half of the table.

For South Asian readers, that matters: India need results to go their way in the race for the 2027 final, and Bangladesh had been inside the top four before this game.

One Test left for Bangladesh to save the series

The series is only two matches long, so Bangladesh cannot win it now. They can still draw it by winning the second and final Test, and they will need their top order to do better against spin. West Indies need only avoid defeat to take a rare series win in Bangladesh.
