At a glance

  • A Russian drone struck a platform at Dnipro's main railway station on Thursday, October 29, 2026, killing at least 13 people, President Volodymyr Zelensky and regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said.
  • Ukrainian Railways said the jet-powered drone hit the platform beside train No. 866 from Dnipro to Zaporizhzhia; a regular commuter train was also standing there.
  • Police said at least 10 people were injured; the governor earlier gave a figure of at least five. The toll is preliminary.
  • A heightened threat alert had been issued, but many people were still on the platform, the railway's chief Oleksandr Pertsovsky said.
  • At least five more people, including two teenage girls in Chernihiv, were killed in other Russian attacks across Ukraine the same day.

At least 13 people were killed on Thursday, October 29, 2026, when a Russian drone struck a crowded platform at the main railway station in Dnipro, central-eastern Ukraine, where a commuter train and a passenger train bound for Zaporizhzhia were standing, Ukrainian officials said. It is one of the deadliest single attacks on Ukraine's rail network this year, and it came even as Kyiv, Moscow and Washington prepare for new peace talks in November.

What happened

Ukrainian Railways said a jet-powered Russian drone hit the platform where train No. 866, running from Dnipro to Zaporizhzhia, was waiting. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had attacked a platform where "a regular commuter train and a regular passenger train" were standing, and that 13 deaths were confirmed.

The blast left a large hole in the platform, and one train was burned out with its windows smashed. Dnipropetrovsk regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha first described the target as a "transport infrastructure facility" before Dnipro mayor Borys Filatov said a civilian electric train had been hit.

Oleksandr Pertsovsky, head of Ukrainian Railways, said a heightened threat alert had been announced before the strike, but many people were still on the platform when the drone arrived.

Detail Figure
Date Thursday, October 29, 2026

Weapon Jet-powered Russian drone (Ukrainian Railways)
Trains at the platform Commuter train; passenger train No. 866 Dnipro–Zaporizhzhia
Killed At least 13 (preliminary; some counts say 14)

Other deaths in Ukraine the same day At least 5, including two teenage girls in Chernihiv

Officials said the figures were preliminary. Rescue and identification work continued through the afternoon.

Background

Russia has struck Ukraine's railways throughout the war that began with its full-scale invasion in February 2022, hitting stations, depots, bridges and trains and destroying hundreds of locomotives. The network is a lifeline: it moves passengers, grain exports, fuel and military supplies. In September alone, the railway operator said, passengers had to be evacuated from more than 5,800 train services because of drone threats.

Dnipro, a city of close to a million people on the Dnipro river, is a major transport and logistics hub for the eastern front and has been hit many times.

Both sides have stepped up long-range drone and missile attacks in recent months. Overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 613 Ukrainian drones flew towards the Moscow region, 231 of them destroyed on the approach to the capital, while Russia was hosting its summit with African leaders.

At the same time, a local ceasefire around the town of Oleshky in the Kherson region, brokered with the involvement of US First Lady Melania Trump, has held for several days, and Zelensky said on Sunday that Ukraine, the United States and Russia would hold three-way talks in November.

Reactions

Zelensky called the strike "horrific" and said the attack showed that the United States and Europe must take fair and decisive action against Russian escalation. He also criticised a deal reached this month between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that eases some sanctions on Russia and allows it to sell diesel on world markets, saying sanctions on Moscow must not be weakened while the war continues.

There was no immediate comment from Moscow on the Dnipro strike. Russia says it targets military and energy infrastructure and denies deliberately attacking civilians.

Why it matters

The attack hit ordinary commuters at a station, in the middle of the day. Trains are how millions of Ukrainians travel, and frequent alerts and evacuations show how exposed rail passengers have become. The strike also raises pressure on Western governments over sanctions relief and could weigh on the atmosphere before the November talks.

For energy importers in South Asia and elsewhere, the dispute over easing sanctions on Russian diesel matters: more Russian fuel on the market tends to lower prices, but Kyiv and many European governments say it funds the war.

What happens next

Ukrainian authorities are expected to confirm the final toll and name the victims, and Dnipro is likely to declare a day of mourning. Kyiv will press its partners for more air defence for cities and rail hubs. Trilateral talks between Ukraine, the United States and Russia are due in November; the date and venue have not yet been announced.

A Russian jet-powered drone hit a crowded platform at Dnipro's main station where a commuter train and passenger train No. 866 to Zaporizhzhia were standing. At least 13 people were killed and at least 10 injured, Ukrainian officials said.

How many people died in the Dnipro train station attack?

Why does Russia attack Ukrainian trains?

Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine's railway network since the 2022 invasion, destroying hundreds of locomotives, because the railways carry passengers, freight and military supplies. In September alone more than 5,800 train services had to be evacuated because of drone threats, the railway operator said.
