Investigators turn to mall cameras
Police Chief Dan Marshall spoke to reporters shortly before midnight. He said the mall has cameras and that investigators hoped to obtain footage from them. Detectives were interviewing witnesses at a scene that remained active into the night.
Police have not said whether they are looking for one shooter or several, what led to the gunfire, or whether the victims knew each other or the person responsible. Those answers are still open, and early accounts of shootings often change as detectives work through witness statements and video.
What it means for people in Fairfield this weekend
The shooting came just before one of the busiest nights of the year for Halloween stores and family events. Police had not said in their first statements whether the mall's planned trick-or-treat event on Saturday would go ahead, so families should check with the mall before heading there.
Anyone who was at the mall on Friday evening, or who has phone video from the area, is being asked to contact Fairfield police on 707-428-7600. People with relatives who may have been there should contact local hospitals or police rather than relying on social media, where names of victims have not been officially confirmed.
Questions police still have to answer
Three matters will shape the next police update: whether a suspect is in custody or still being sought, whether the critically wounded survive, and whether the store was the target or just the place where a dispute erupted.
The victims' names are usually released after relatives have been told. Police had not given a time for their next briefing.
