At a glance

  • Harriet Dart beat Austria's Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday's final for her first WTA Tour title.
  • She won every main-draw match in three sets and saved three match points in the semi-final.
  • Dart rises from world No 115 to No 83 in the live rankings; she was No 224 a year ago.
  • She is the sixth British woman to win a WTA singles title since 2000.

Harriet Dart won the first WTA Tour title of her career at the age of 30 on Sunday, coming from a set down to beat Austrian teenager Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Guangzhou Open final. The British qualifier had never reached a tour-level final before this week.

Her reward is a jump from world No 115 to No 83 in the live rankings. This time last year she was ranked No 224.

Five breaks in a row, and a championship point missed

Dart, the British No 5, dropped serve in the opening game and was playing catch-up for the whole first set. She broke back for 4-4, but the 18-year-old Tagger hit straight back and closed out the set.

Dart took the only break of the second set for 5-3 and levelled the match. The decider was chaotic, with five consecutive service breaks before she saved two break points to hold for 5-3. She then had two championship points on Tagger's serve. A big serve saved the first and Dart netted a mid-court forehand on the second.

She served out the match to 15 in the next game, and fell on her back when an unreturned serve sealed it. "I'll try not to get too emotional," she told the crowd, thanking her team and her coach, former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli.

A title that nearly ended before it started

Dart was a set and a break down in her first qualifying match, against world No 632 Shek Ying Cheuk. From there, every main-draw match she played went to three sets.

Round Opponent Note
First Tatiana Prozorova Three sets
Second Janice Tjen No 2 seed
Quarter-final Paula Badosa No 5 seed
Semi-final Sun Xinran 16-year-old wildcard; Dart saved three match points
Final Lilli Tagger Won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

Her best previous tour result was a semi-final at Cluj-Napoca in 2024, where she lost to Karolina Pliskova, and her career-high ranking of No 70 came that September.

Where she stands among British winners

Dart becomes the sixth British woman to win a WTA singles title this century. Heather Watson, Johanna Konta and Katie Boulter have won four each, and Emma Raducanu won the 2021 US Open.

Watson's win in Japan in 2012 had ended a British wait for a title that went back to Sara Gomer in 1988. Raducanu's run in New York, also as a qualifier, is still the biggest of the group.

What a top-100 ranking changes

The jump matters in practical terms. A top-100 ranking usually brings direct entry to Grand Slam main draws, so Dart may not have to go through qualifying at the big events next season, the route that started this week's run.
