Automation, which includes HashiCorp, fell 3% against a tough comparison with last year. Annual recurring revenue for Red Hat's OpenShift platform grew more than 30%.

Outlook
IBM kept its forecast for full-year 2026 revenue growth of 4% to 5% at constant currency and raised its free cash flow target to growth of more than $1 billion over last year. Executives said software growth should be about 7% to 8% for the year, with Red Hat expected to return to double-digit growth in the fourth quarter, infrastructure growing at a low double-digit rate and consulting at a low to mid-single-digit pace.
What the company said
Chief executive Arvind Krishna credited "disciplined execution" for faster revenue growth and strong cash generation. On the earnings call he said enterprise AI was entering its next phase, with clients looking to run AI on their own systems for cost and data-control reasons. IBM is pitching a combination of Red Hat, watsonx, Confluent and HashiCorp software to manage AI tools and agents inside large companies. Management said about a quarter of software growth came from deals that slipped from earlier quarters and the rest from new business.
On quantum computing, IBM highlighted partner demonstrations of quantum advantage on its hardware in July, its selection for the next stage of a US defence research programme, and 16 enterprise quantum agreements this year. It plans a Quantum Day on December 10.
Market reaction
IBM shares closed the regular session up 3.96% at $251.49, then fell about 3.7% to around $242 after the results. Analysts on the call questioned how much of the strength in mainframe-related software would last, and IBM said it does not expect double-digit growth in that area to continue.
Why it matters
IBM is one of the first large enterprise technology companies to report this season, and its results are watched as a guide to corporate spending on software, consulting and AI. The flat consulting business suggests companies are still careful with big IT projects, while growth in software points to steady demand for cloud and data tools. For outsourcing-heavy economies such as India and Pakistan, where IT services firms compete with IBM Consulting, the cautious consulting picture is an important signal for tech jobs and exports.
What happens next
IBM's fourth-quarter and full-year results are due in late January 2027, when the company has promised more detail on its long-term software growth targets. Before then, results from the other big US technology companies over the coming weeks will give investors a fuller picture of corporate AI spending.
