At a glance

  • Marc Marquez won the 20-lap Malaysian Grand Prix by 4.172 seconds from Pedro Acosta, with brother Alex Marquez third.
  • It was his seventh grand prix win of 2026 and his 80th in the premier class.
  • He now leads the injured Jorge Martin by 44 points and Marco Bezzecchi by 67.
  • The result gives him match point at next weekend's Qatar Grand Prix, with a 10th world title at stake.

Marc Marquez won the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang on Sunday, finishing 4.172 seconds ahead of Pedro Acosta and moving 44 points clear in the championship. He can now wrap up the 2026 MotoGP title at the Qatar Grand Prix next weekend.

His younger brother Alex Marquez took third from pole position. Jorge Martin, his closest title rival, watched from the sidelines after withdrawing with a broken wrist bone.

The first four corners decided it

Marquez started second on the grid and beat Alex to Turn 1. The Gresini rider dived back through under braking for Turn 4 but ran deep, and the factory Ducati was through again. Nobody got near it after that.

Over the first half of the 20 laps, Alex became a useful obstacle for his brother. He held up Acosta for several laps, even though the KTM rider was clearly quicker and had won Saturday's sprint. Acosta finally got past on lap 10, but by then the gap to the front was too large. With three laps left, Marquez was still almost four seconds clear, and he brought the bike home in sweltering conditions without being threatened.

The win was his seventh grand prix victory of the season and the 80th of his premier-class career.

Aprilia's bad afternoon

Aprilia needed something from this race and got very little. Marco Bezzecchi and Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura fought over fourth and touched at Turn 1 in the closing laps. Bezzecchi then made a mistake on the final lap and handed fifth to Enea Bastianini, leaving Ogura fourth and Bezzecchi 67 points behind with little racing left.

Pos Rider Team Gap
1 Marc Marquez Ducati Team 20 laps
2 Pedro Acosta Red Bull KTM +4.172s
3 Alex Marquez Gresini Ducati +5.955s

Alex Marquez is also still carrying a shoulder injury from the Catalan Grand Prix, which makes a podium from pole a decent return. His weekend had started badly when he crashed out of the sprint lead on lap three on Saturday.

How the championship looks now

Rider Gap to Marc Marquez
Jorge Martin 44 points behind
Marco Bezzecchi 67 points behind

Marquez arrived at Sepang leading Martin by just 10 points after the Australian round was cancelled, then stretched that to 19 with second place in the sprint. Martin tried to ride a week after breaking the bone at Phillip Island, could not continue, and withdrew from the weekend. Sunday's 25 points took the gap to 44.

That swing, 34 points in one weekend, is what turned a tight title fight into a likely coronation.

What a Qatar title would mean

A championship at Lusail would be Marquez's 10th world title across all classes, one more than Valentino Rossi's nine. Martin's fitness is the main open question, because he needs to outscore Marquez heavily and has not completed a race since breaking the bone.

Riders have been pressing in a late effort to avoid racing in Qatar, given the conflict in the Gulf. Any change to the round would alter the arithmetic. For now, the Qatar Grand Prix is next on the calendar, next weekend at Lusail.
