At a glance

  • Sovereignty won the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on October 31, 2026, by 1 3/4 lengths over The Puma in 2:00.36.
  • It was Godolphin's first Classic win under its own banner and trainer Bill Mott's third, the first since 2011.
  • Defending champion Forever Young of Japan, the 8-5 favourite, finished fifth, the first time in 17 starts he missed the top three.
  • Sovereignty retires with 8 wins from 13 starts and $10,516,550 in earnings, and goes to stud with Darley America for 2027.

Sovereignty won the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday, beating The Puma by 1 3/4 lengths in the last race of his career. The 2025 Kentucky Derby winner covered the 1 1/4 miles in 2:00.36 under Junior Alvarado and gave Godolphin, the racing operation of Dubai's Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, its first Classic win under its own banner.

Japan's Forever Young, last year's winner and the 8-5 favourite, could only finish fifth.

From a foot abscess to the winner's circle

Twelve months ago this race went wrong before it started. Sovereignty was the morning-line favourite for the 2025 Classic and was scratched days beforehand with a fever. This year's preparation was hardly smooth either: after winning the Whitney at Saratoga on August 8, he missed the Jockey Club Gold Cup on September 18 because of a foot abscess.

"Thank goodness we had the opportunity to try again," said Mott, who called the colt a once-in-a-lifetime horse.

Sent off at 9-5, Sovereignty sat fifth as his stablemate Knightsbridge set fractions of 23.54, 47.64 and 1:11.43. He began his run at the three-eighths pole, swept around horses on the outside, passed Knightsbridge in the stretch and held off The Puma. Alvarado said no horse could have been finishing faster.

Sovereignty paid $5.94 for a $2 win ticket. The 2-4 exacta returned $31.30 for $1.

Forever Young's rare off day

Forever Young had not finished outside the top three in 16 previous starts, and a repeat win could have made him the richest thoroughbred ever. He has earned more than $32 million, against about $35.5 million for Hong Kong's Romantic Warrior. Yahagi apologised to the horse's supporters afterwards.

Golden Tempo, the other big name in the field, spotted his rivals nearly 10 lengths early and could not recover to better than sixth. "He got tired," said trainer Cherie DeVaux. The Puma's camp sounded happier, saying the colt was in good shape for next year.

A place in the record books, then stud

Sovereignty is the seventh Kentucky Derby winner to take the Classic and only the third to do it at four, the first since Alysheba in 1988. He also won the 2025 Belmont Stakes. His career ends with 8 wins, 3 seconds and a third from 13 starts, and earnings of $10,516,550.

He is the reigning Horse of the Year and racing writers expect a second title when the awards are decided, though that has not yet been announced. He joins Darley America's stallion roster for 2027, at Jonabell Farm in Lexington, alongside Knightsbridge. No stud fee has been reported.

The win also added to a strong year for his sire, Into Mischief, who stands for $250,000 in 2027 at Spendthrift Farm.

Every Breeders' Cup winner from Keeneland

Ryan Moore and Flavien Prat each won three races across the two days, with Prat taking the top jockey award on a tiebreak. Aidan O'Brien trained three winners.
