New Zealand beat India by seven wickets in the fifth and final T20I in Hamilton on Sunday, chasing 192 with 12 balls to spare, but India still took the series 3-2. Tim Seifert hit 93, and Glenn Phillips made an unbeaten 65 off 33 balls that took him past Phil Salt to set a world record for runs in a bilateral T20I series.
India arrived at Seddon Park with the trophy already safe, after going 3-0 up in the series. New Zealand won the last two games, and this chase was the highest they have ever completed against India in the format.
Milne's 4 for 19 stops India at 191
Captain Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan both made fifties at a steady pace and India seemed set for more, but Adam Milne led a disciplined attack and finished with 4 for 19. India closed on 191 for 8, a score that looked competitive until the powerplay of the chase.
Seifert and Phillips take the chase apart
Arshdeep Singh removed Finn Allen in the second over, but Seifert and Daryl Mitchell steadied the innings. New Zealand were 59 for 1 after six overs, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceding 20 runs in the sixth alone.
Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Mitchell in the ninth over, which only brought in Phillips. They were 96 for 2 at halfway and added 86 off 42 balls for the third wicket. India tried Abhishek Sharma with the ball and got no breakthrough. Nitish Kumar Reddy finally removed Seifert in the 17th over, seven runs short of a maiden T20I hundred, a miss that left him "devastated" despite the win. New Zealand needed very little by then.

Phillips and the new record
Phillips needed 57 going in to pass Salt. He got there with an unbeaten innings that was his fourth half-century of the series.
| Most runs in a bilateral T20I series | Runs | Opponent | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glenn Phillips (New Zealand) | 341 | India | 2026 |
| Phil Salt (England) | 331 | West Indies | 2023 |
| Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan) | 316 | England | 2022 |
His series began with an unbeaten 82 in Christchurch and 70 in the second match. In Auckland he hit 107 off 49 balls with 10 sixes, in a game New Zealand won by 87 runs.
He did all of that for the side that lost the series. India's decisive run came in the first three games, including Abhishek Sharma's 35-ball century in Wellington.
Two defeats after going 3-0 up
Winning a series away in New Zealand is still a good result for India, and it was built on three straight wins while the series was alive. But New Zealand won the last two games comfortably, by 87 runs in Auckland and seven wickets here, and India's bowlers had no answer to Phillips in any of the five matches.
