A man has died and another is in hospital after a stabbing at a centre housing asylum seekers in Tralee, County Kerry, in the south-west of Ireland, early on Saturday. Gardaí, the Irish police, were called to Ballymullen Barracks shortly after 5:20am and found a man with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
A second man, in his 40s, was taken to University Hospital Kerry with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening. A third man, in his late 40s, was arrested and is being held at a Garda station in the county under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, which allows suspects to be detained for questioning.
What is confirmed, and what is not
Gardaí have not named the dead man or said how the three men knew each other. They have not given a motive, and they have not publicly said what led to the attack. Those details should come after a post-mortem examination, which has been arranged.

The scene has been sealed off. A senior investigating officer has been appointed and an incident room is being set up at Tralee Garda Station.
The Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration said it was responding to a critical incident at the centre. It said it could not comment further because a criminal investigation is under way.
Mayor's plea on a tense topic
The mayor of Tralee, Fine Gael councillor Angie Baily, appealed to residents not to speculate and not to "spread unnecessary hate". She asked anyone with information to go to the Gardaí and not to social media.
"This is quite an emotive topic," she said, noting that a life had been lost. She said families were likely to be frightened and upset, but encouraged them to carry on with their Halloween plans.
Her warning reflects a recent history. Rumours spread online after a knife attack in Dublin in November 2023 were followed by a riot in the city centre, and attacks on buildings used for asylum seekers have continued since, including an arson attack in Drogheda in November 2025.
Earlier deaths at asylum centres in Ireland
IPAS centres house people who have applied for international protection while their claims are decided. This is not the first fatal case linked to asylum seekers' accommodation in recent times:
- February 2025: a 34-year-old Nigerian asylum seeker, who lived at the Ballyogan centre in south Dublin, was killed in a stabbing in Dublin.
- October 2025: a Ukrainian teenager was stabbed to death at an asylum centre in Dublin.
How to give information
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who can help to contact Tralee Garda Station on 066 7102300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station. Under Section 4, the arrested man can be held for a limited period before he must be charged or released, so a decision is likely in the coming days.
