  • Everton climb to seventh with their first away league win of the season; Newcastle fall to 13th after a fourth defeat in six league games.

Everton beat Newcastle United 1-0 at St James' Park on Monday night, November 2, and the only goal came from a goalkeeping mistake. Four minutes into the second half, Lukas Hornicek let a shot from Tyrique George squirm under his body and Thierno Barry was there to finish. It was Everton's first away win in the Premier League this season, and it lifted David Moyes's side to seventh.

For Newcastle it was a second defeat in five days and a fourth in six league games. Substitute Jacob Ramsey was sent off deep in stoppage time, and the players left the pitch to boos.

One fumble, one finish

The first half was balanced and short of clear chances, with Barry Everton's most dangerous player and the source of their best openings.

The goal arrived in the 49th minute. George's shot looked like one the goalkeeper would hold. Hornicek went down to gather it, the ball slipped beneath him, and Barry reacted first to put it over the line.

Newcastle pushed for an equaliser for the rest of the half but created little that troubled Everton's back line. Their frustration showed in the final minutes. Ramsey, sent on to chase the game, picked up two yellow cards in the space of 86 seconds and was shown red in the eighth minute of added time.

Pressure on Howe, a lift for Moyes

Eddie Howe's side began the season expecting to challenge for the European places again. Instead, Monday's defeat leaves them in the bottom half, with the crowd turning on the team at full time. A 2-0 win at Crystal Palace earlier in the run had suggested a recovery; this result undid it.

Everton, by contrast, have now turned their season around away from home. They had not won a league game on the road since February before Monday. Barry has given them a forward who stretches defences and is in the right place when chances come.

Serie A: Parma stun Atalanta, Fiorentina come back at Sassuolo

Two Serie A games also closed the 10th round on Monday.

Match Score Key facts
Atalanta v Parma 0-3 Fabbian (41'), Zappacosta own goal (47'), third goal on 58'
Sassuolo v Fiorentina 2-4 Fiorentina recovered from a goal down

Parma's win in Bergamo was the first under coach Alberto Gilardino and moved them up to 15th. Fabbian opened the scoring before half-time, Zappacosta turned the ball into his own net two minutes after the restart, and Parma added a third 11 minutes later. Atalanta stay 13th on 11 points after a fifth defeat of the season, and questions are growing over the coach's position.

In Reggio Emilia, Fiorentina came from behind to win 4-2. The result takes them to eight points, level with Sassuolo, whose defence has now let in 26 goals, the most in the league. Parma are also on eight points, so three clubs are bunched just above the relegation places.

Next up

European club competitions take over midweek before the Premier League returns at the weekend for its last round before the November international break. Howe needs a response quickly; Moyes wants Everton to build on a first away win. In Italy, round 11 is played from Saturday, with Atalanta looking to stop a slide that has dragged them into the lower half of the table.
