At a glance

  • Qatar's Ministry of Interior lists a free tourist visa on arrival for Pakistani, Indian and Thai passport holders.
  • The stay is up to 30 days, but it is limited to the length of the traveller's hotel booking.
  • Four things are required: a passport valid for at least three months, a confirmed return ticket, accredited health insurance and a hotel booking made through Discover Qatar.
  • Hotel bookings made on any other website are not accepted, so check this before paying.
  • The clarification follows earlier reports that visa-on-arrival services for Pakistanis had been suspended.

Pakistani passport holders can enter Qatar on a free tourist visa on arrival and stay for up to 30 days, as long as they meet four conditions set by Qatar's Ministry of Interior. The same facility covers citizens of India and Thailand. The catch for most travellers is the hotel rule: the booking must be made through the official Discover Qatar website, and the visa lasts only as long as that booking.

The four requirements at a glance

Requirement What you need Common mistake
Passport Valid for at least three months Not checking the expiry date before booking
Air ticket Confirmed round-trip ticket Arriving with a one-way ticket
Health insurance A policy from an accredited insurance company Assuming any travel policy will do
Hotel Confirmed reservation made only through Discover Qatar Booking on another website, which is not accepted

A traveller who cannot show all four may not get the visa at the airport. The visa is free, but the hotel, flights and insurance are at the traveller's own cost.

Why the length of your stay depends on the hotel

Thirty days is the ceiling, not a guarantee. Someone with a seven-night booking will be allowed in for that period. To stay longer, you need a longer reservation made in advance.

So the cost of the trip depends largely on Discover Qatar's hotel rates. Compare the total price before you buy a ticket, and print the confirmation along with your insurance certificate and return booking to show at Doha's immigration desks.

What changed after the suspension reports

The ministry's rules were set out after reports that Qatar had temporarily suspended visa-on-arrival and online visa services for Pakistani nationals. Those reports caused confusion among travellers, especially during a year when the Iran war has repeatedly disrupted flights and airspace across the Gulf.

The facility is separate from Qatar's other visa-free and tourist visa programmes. It is for tourism. It does not allow work, and people looking for jobs in Qatar still need an employer-sponsored work visa.

How it compares with other Gulf options for Pakistanis

Qatar's offer arrives alongside another recent easing: the Saudi embassy in Islamabad has begun same-day visa processing for Pakistanis. Qatar's route is different because no visa application is needed before travel, though the documents must be arranged in advance.

Before you leave, check Qatar's Ministry of Interior or the Discover Qatar website for any late changes, and ask your airline too, since it may check these documents at check-in in Pakistan. Conditions on this route have shifted several times, and some older web pages still show different passport-validity rules, including six months. If your passport has less than six months left, renew it or confirm with the embassy first.
