Indian film director Sanjay Gupta, who made the heist thriller Kaante and the crime drama Shootout at Wadala, has died after a fall at his home in Mumbai. Police said he slipped in the kitchen of his Versova residence on Friday night, suffered a serious head injury and later died. An accidental death report has been registered, and officers said they do not suspect foul play.

His friend, director Milap Zaveri, confirmed the death. Reports differ on his age: he was either 57 or 59, because his birth year is given as both 1969 and 1967.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit called it "a great loss to our industry" and described Gupta as "full of life". Details of the last rites were to be shared by the family.

The Hindi film director who took his crime stories to Los Angeles

Gupta made his name with stylish gangster stories at a time when Hindi cinema's underworld films were moving towards a harder, glossier look. Kaante, released in 2002, was the one that travelled. Shot largely in Los Angeles, it followed a gang of Indian men planning a bank robbery in the US, and it drew comparisons with Reservoir Dogs for good reason.

Quentin Tarantino himself noticed. Speaking at an Indian film festival in Los Angeles in 2007, he called it "fabulous" and said he was "truly honoured", enjoying the idea of Indian men coming to America to loot a bank. Gupta never pretended otherwise. He spoke openly of his willingness to "beg, borrow and steal from any medium", and that attitude brought him both a following and accusations of copying.

2009 Acid Factory Producer

The Shootout films, set in Mumbai's real gang history, became his best-known later work. Kaabil, with Hrithik Roshan as a blind man seeking revenge, was among his biggest commercial successes.

Sanjay Dutt loses a brother, in his words

Gupta's career was tied closely to Sanjay Dutt, who starred in several of his films. The two fell out for years, a split Gupta later said nearly drove him out of the industry, and they reconciled. Dutt posted an emotional tribute on Saturday. "Gupts, my brother. I still cannot believe that you are gone," he wrote, adding that the two had been discussing a sequel to Kaante and that he would make it.

Gupta is survived by his wife, Anuradha Lekhi Gupta, his son Shivaansh and his daughter Dalai. Mumbai police are completing routine formalities under the accidental death report.
